There are not many things that East Germany (that most joyless country in the annals of the world) and Italy have in common, but here is one: a conservation policy that closely mirrors the principles of “triage”. In analogy to the requirements of battlefield medicine, both Italy and East Germany divided their cities or cultural sites into the lightly injured, the seriously ravaged that would benefit from further treatment and the

… and when the twain finally did meet, two worlds collided – and two rival viewpoints of history Two trillion dollars have been spent. This is not a trifling amount, even for one of the world’s richest nations. But in modern Germany, Binz means beach. It has always stood for sandy beaches and seaside fun – at least since Binz became one of the busiest and most popular holiday resorts on the country’s Baltic coast.

The City of Seven Lakes

"A lake view in Schwerin"

Hiking in Germany The City of Seven Lakes in Germany Mountains provide the underlying theme of most hiking trails: England has the South Downs, France the Massif Central and Germany the gently rolling landscapes of its various Mittelgebirges.

Now don’t get me wrong. I have always enjoyed my hikes through this type of landcape, otherwise I would not have done so many of them.
