Moated Castles and Hiking Trails

"Moated castle Burg vischering in Muensterland Germany"

Moated Castles on a Hiking Trail We’ve “explored” some of the day hiking trails in and around Muenster. Here we showcase some of the highlights Muensterland has to offer on your next hiking holiday in Germany.

More than any other German towns, Muensterland, situated in North Rhine Westphalia, boasts quite a number of moated castles (Wasserburgen). It is a region that is rather flat geographically.

The Prettiest German Hiking Trail The Saar Hunsrueck Steig

Trail

The Saar-Hunsruecksteig in southwest Germany features 12 stages with a total length of 180 km. consists of two older and somewhat less high-profile trails (the “Saar-Steig” in the west and the “Hunsrück-Steig” in the east). Because of its Y-shape, however, you cannot hike the entire trail in a single stretch.

German Landscapes Seen Through A Train Window

German Landscapes Seen from a Train Window

Whenever practical, we choose to take the train to our holiday destinations. It’s the most relaxing way to travel and we get to sight-see the countryside of our destination.

In Germany, where train travel is reliable, you can be amazed at the changes in German landscapes from one German Land to another. Here are some examples of the German landscapes we’ve seen while speedily rolling by

Historic Saarbruecken

Where to Go in Germany Saarbrücken is a little more than one hour by train to the south, provides a contrast to Trier in almost every way. Mainly in as much as it is largely new, fairly busy (as a centre of industry and administration) and, well, not particularly pretty.

There are some historic buildings, but the city was destroyed several times in her history, first by the Swedes in the Thirty-Year War

Hiking Hub Trier

"Karl Marx house in Trier"

Hiking Hub Trier is not only one of the oldest German cities; it is also one of the historically most important. Today, it is an important hub for a number of longer hiking trails in the area: the Rheinsteig, the Eifelsteig, the Saarsteig are all less than an hour away by train. It is also a feeder trail of the Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela aka the Way of St James or the Jakobsweg.

The Saar Loop In Germany

Hiking in Germany The Saar Loop Who says that everything in Germany is efficient?

The river Saar definitely is not, ambling slowly through the idyllic valleys of the “Rhenish massif” and managing to make a 10 km detour out of the short 2 km as the crow flies trip from Besseringen (seen on the left of the picture, behind the bend) to Mettlach, seen on the right.

The Malerweg Hiking Trail For Painters

Hiking in Germany Malerweg – The Hiking Trail for Painters Trail

The Malerweg, 8 stages of altogether 112 km in east Germany. This hiking trail for painters follows the Elbe eastwards (upstream) from Pirna to Schmilka (at the German-Czech border) where it crosses the river and leads you all the way back to Pirna on the left bank.

Some of the Festivals In Germany

"Bierborse poster"

Some Festivals in Germany There’s more to German festivals than the Oktoberfest. Why not combine your hike with a trip to coincide with one of the festivals in Germany – or vice versa? Here are some suggestions. 1) Rhine in Flames – Nights of Bengal Fire

A night of fireworks on the Seven Mountains. Ideal if you are on a business trip in Cologne or hiking on the Rheinsteig.

2) Kulmbach Bierfest

Hiking in Germany

The Rheinsteig Hiking Trail Trail

A very, very long 320 km from Bonn in the north (near Cologne) to Wiesbaden in the south (near Frankfurt) in 23 stages. Who has time for that? Which is why I strongly recommend to concentrate on the views-and-castles-galore central stretch between Koblenz and Rüdesheim on stages 12 to 19.
